Animal Health

An organic livestock producer cannot use many of the things that a conventional livestock producer might be used to: antibiotics, hormones and analgesics, to name a few. But that's OK because organic animal healthcare management doesn't focus on disease, but rather on health and prevention. Organic producers focus on healthy, nutritionally balanced diets, sanitation, and living conditions that support the emotional and physical health of the animals. There is, in fact, lots of evidence that organic dairy herds, for example, live longer and tend to be healthier than their conventional counterparts, despite (or perhaps because of) the lack of antibiotics and hormones.

And when diseases and health problems do arise, organic producers have a large toolkit of remedies and practices available to them, including tinctures, botanicals, essential oils, homeopathy, vitamins, and antioxidants. The resources listed here link you to advice on practices and remedies that will help you maintain the health of your animals while meeting the strict certification guidelines of the National Organic Program. If you're interested in learning more about where to go for organic livestock supplies and services, go to the Supplies & Services section of the Pathway.
