Do you ever wonder what the real differences between organic and non-organic foods are? How can you actually tell if they are organic or not by looking at the fruit or vegetable? Or is there really a quality difference? Well, if you follow these guidelines here are some tricks to tell the differences between organic and non-organic foods.

When looking at the physical attributes of an organic or non-organic food, size and shape will play a role. For instance organic fruits and vegetables will look more imperfect. They will be flawed with some dis coloration as well as highly variating in size. Non organic fruits or vegetables will look almost perfect in shape and be mostly uniform in size. In short, this is due to being highly processed and treated with growth hormones so that the fruit/vegetables will be bigger and more pleasing to the eye. Organic foods are minimally processed and grow naturally so you will see the true color of an apple instead of being treated and conditioned to be perfectly candy red. The similar reasoning is used for buying organic meats. An organic meat cut will be significantly smaller than a non-organic meat cut. Again, this is due to non-organic meat being highly processed and treated with growth hormones to grow larger and made to look like you are getting more out of your dollar.

As far as the differences in quality of organic food and non-organic food this is where it becomes tricky and more about preference. They are both held to the same set of standards. The difference is that organic food is held to an extra set of standards by the NOP to be graded USDA Certified organic. Organic food has less of an impact on our environment, is free of additives and synthetic hormones. The methods of farming used on organic foods are stricter. You know when eating an organic means of food that you are eating a safe product, that isn't pumped full of chemicals that could have a negative effect on your body in the long run. As of now the running research shows that nutritionally the quality differences of non-organic food and organic foods are minimal but this research is ongoing.

The greatest difference and most notable between organic and non-organic foods are the substances used for preservation and growth. The NOP does not allow the modifications of pesticides, additives, or synthetics to enhance or protect the organic foods. They are highly limited to other methods using natural resources. Additionally in organic meats, dairy, and poultry they are raised without modifications of antibiotics, and enchanters of growth as well. The added antibiotics as well as these other synthetic chemicals can be harmful to your body to a result of even having carcinogens. Organic food in short contains less unknown ingredients.
